The visa policy of India mandates visitors to get visas before they can enter the country, but this rule doesn't apply to citizens from visa-exempt countries. Visa-exempt visitors are of two groups; the first group gets a visa on arrival in India, while the second group may apply for e visas online abroad before making the trip to India. India's visa policy spells out the rules, regulations, and requirements for foreigners coming to India based on their nationality, the purpose of the trip, and the duration of stay.
India's e visa is available to a vast majority of nationalities who can access it online. The e visa program offers eligible visitors five types of e visas, namely the tourist, business, medical, medical attendant, and conference e visa. Each one is issued for a specific purpose, and they have their unique requirements.
India also issues permits to Foreigners who may want to study or work in India or those who wish to stay much longer. People in this category are not eligible for e visas because e visas are only for short visits. For long-term visits, they must apply to the Indian embassy in their home country or country of residence.
Also, important to note are foreigners who enjoy visa-exempt status are free to visit and stay indefinitely. Citizens of Maldives are eligible for permanent residency in India despite not having visas, and due to their privileged status, they can live and work in India without requiring permits.
If you are from any of the eligible countries, you can apply for an e visa, provided you meet the requirements. Consult the list of eligible countries before applying.
Key Information About The Indian e Visa
Apply For A Visa That Meets Your Needs
When applying for an e visa be careful so you don't apply for the wrong one. These visas are created to meet specific purposes so make sure you are picking the right one. For instance, if you are traveling for a conference, apply for a conference visa not a business visa. Persons traveling to India for medical treatment as patients should apply for a medical e visa not a medical attendant visa.
This is because the immigration officers at the entry port will ask questions and demand documents from you and you may encounter problems if your papers don't align with the purpose of your trip.
The Fee Is Non Refundable
The application fee is mandatory and if you don't pay it you will not be able to submit your application. This fee is for document processing and will not be refunded even if your application is denied. It should be paid with a bank issued debit or credit card with sufficient funds to cover the bank charges and application fee.
It Cannot Be Converted
Although you can extend your stay in India as an e visa visitor, you cannot convert it to a residential visa for a longer stay. If you change your mind and would like to remain in the country for a longer time, you will have to leave and apply for a consular visa outside India.
Enter Through Approved Routes
You must enter India through any of the approved routes listed under each e visa. If you attempt to enter through an unapproved route you may be allowed into the country by law enforcement.
